Onboarding a disqualified director who is running a company anyway makes you a witness to a criminal offence — and your supervisor will ask what you checked.

What applies to accountants and bookkeepers
- AML supervisor
- ICAEW, ACCA, AAT, CIMA or HMRC (default supervisor)
- Who to screen
- Accountants and bookkeepers typically screen new clients, their directors and beneficial owners.
- In practice
- Every accountancy practice must identify and verify beneficial owners before acting. A director search on Companies House does not show disqualification — the disqualified directors register is a separate search, and a person acting as a director while disqualified commits an offence under CDDA 1986 s.13.
How the screen works
- Enter a company number: we pull the company, every current officer and every person with significant control from Companies House. Or enter a person's name.
- Each name is normalised and compared with the OFSI consolidated list (individuals and entities) and searched on the register of disqualified directors.
- Matches are graded — probable when name and birth month/year agree, possible when only the name (or only the birth year) matches. Nothing is ever reported as confirmed.
- If a source is down the layer reads UNKNOWN, never clear. The £9.99 report gives every match with its evidence and a dated PDF for your file.
